PM meets Yadav trio for consensus on Women’s Quota Bill
2010-03-09 [10:36:00 hrs]
PM meets Yadav trio for consensus on Women’s Quota BillPrime Minister Manmohan Singh has met with Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and Janta Dal-U leader Sharad Yadav Tuesday to build consensus over the Women’s Reservation Bill, which was blocked in the Rajya Sabha Monday.

The meeting began at around 9.30 am in the PM’s official residence at 7 Race Course Road ahead of the start of normal business in Parliament.

Even as the meeting is underway, SP chief Mulayam Singh continues to oppose the Bill in its present form and has pushed for sub-quotas within the quota proposed under the Bill.

Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee is also due to meet the top leaders of BJP, NCP, CPM and others before the start of Parliament to build consensus.

However, Congress party sources earlier said that there is no time frame for the all-party meeting, which was proposed earlier.

However, the Congress Core Committee, which also met here, is yet to come out with a clear statement whether the bill will be passed after a discussion in the Rajya Sabha or not.

The bill seeks to reserve one-third of the seats in parliament and state legislatures for women.

The members of RJD and SP were leading the opposition against the bill and were successful in blocking it in the Rajya Sabha Monday.
